Then, the usual sounds of shouted orders, melding metal, and ceaseless hammering of rivets at the John Brown Shipyard had temporarily fallen silent, replaced by the rousing strains of "Rule Britannia." Gentlemen in frock coats or dark uniforms awash with shining medals had stood with ladies dressed in summer pastels, their faces shielded from the sun by wide picture hats adorned with flowers and a kaleidoscope of twirling parasols. A wave of excited, enthusiastic adulation followed Lusitania out of New York harbor-a distant echo of a fine, early summer day nine years earlier, when another expectant crowd had gathered along the banks of Scotland's River Clyde. ![]()
